Today is the 6th of May, 6 days away from the start of revision week, 17 days away from my first exam, and 13 days away from my 19th birthday. I’m 19 on the 19th, hooray! My golden birthday. I don’t really understand why turning the age of the day of your birth is a cause for greater than normal celebration, but if it makes it more fun, then I’m all for it.
Due to the fact that my birthday falls during the lovely week of exams as does the birthday of one of my Uni friends, we decided–or our friends decided–to go out on the prowl dressed up as Disney characters. Oh joy. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Disney like any other 1990s American child would, so I am thrilled with the idea. I suppose that due to the randomness of St Andrews that if there existed a place where pub crawling dressed as Disney princesses would be tolerated, nay supported, it would be here. That being said, I am going to be Pocahontas, the Native American ‘princess’ who, in the film, fell in love with and saved the English colonist John Smith from execution at the hands of her father the chief of the tribe. Willingly suspending disbelief of love and danger in pre-colonial America, the film is a good one, including such lovely sing-along tracks and ‘Savages Pts. 1 & 2′ and everyone’s favorite, ‘Colors of the Wind.’ I just hope no one makes me belt it out after downing shots in the pub.
Overall, I’m pleased with my costume. It’s beige and I have cheap-o accessories courtesy of the local cancer and heart disease shops, along with a plan for war paint in the form of lipstick.
But first, dinner at a fake Italian restaurant where they cut the total cost of the bill in half for students, thus making it the perfect place for large groups of us, always celebrating birthdays….God, I’ve eaten at this place 4 or 5 times in the past 4 months. Dear sweet Jesus there’s only so much pseudo-Italian grub I can take.
My other birthday cohort is going as Belle from Beauty and the Beast. A lovely choice I think considering her general niceness and brown hair and eyes combo. Other Disney characters attending the fete include The Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, a pair of Tinkerbells, Minnie Mouse, Jesse from Toy Story, Captain Jack Sparrow, Prince Charming, Jasmine, and handful of others.
Off to dinner now, joyous, and then back for some suiting up. ‘Twill be fun.
P.S. A quote from my illustrious roommate about tonight, nb: Tuesdays are boozedays in the pubs.
‘I think tonight is going to be the boozeday to end all boozedays.’
